The Florida BioDatabase is a comprehensive and searchable directory of all Florida biotechnology companies with active research and development activity utilizing metrics established by Ernst and Young to track state growth activity. Florida biotechnology companies represent about 10-11% of the United States’s biotechnology activity. The free database helps industry leaders identify and understand our region’s biotech companies and accurately assess industry growth. Venture capital firms use the directory to identify investment prospects. Click here to check out profiles of biotech companies across the state.
When the database was established in 2008, there were 136 biotechnology companies in the state. Since then, the Florida biotech industry has grown by a staggering 92% to 262 companies. Much of that growth has sprung from the Gainesville-Alachua area.
Unlike the state’s other biotech clusters in South Florida and Tampa Bay, the Gainesville region is unique because the majority of its biotech companies began as local startups. The University of Florida’s Office of Technology and Licensing is a major driver.
